The purposes of “Mayors for Peace” are to contribute to the attainment of lasting world peace and security. The organization calls for the total abolition of nuclear weapons and the building up of sustainability of cities and towns.
"Mayors for Peace" was founded by Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1982 following the appeal launched by the Mayor of Hiroshima at the UN Headquarters in New York.
"Mayors for Peace" has a consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council, and, beyond its primary goals, encourages its member cities to work in solidarity to resolve the problems hindering the development and peaceful coexistence of the human race (starvation and poverty, the plight of refugees, violation of human rights abuses, and environmental degradation.)
Volgograd’s participation in the “Mayors for Peace” activities facilitates the promotion of our city’s initiatives in the area of people’s diplomacy, and strengthens the connection between our city and its twin-city Hiroshima.
Volgograd joined “Mayors for Peace” in 1983. It is currently one of the organization’s Vice-Presidents and a Lead City in Russia.
